While I never saw combat when I was in the Army, I was involved in some very exciting situations during my time as a police officer and I can see how some participants can get the facts mixed up. I recall that during an arrest of one really big wild drunk, it took about 5 officers to get him cuffed then later one of the officers did not recall that I arrived to assist and wondered how my cuffs were on the guy. With all that was taking place on Mount Suribachi, I can see how one might have a false memory of helping raise the flag if they were in close proximity. I suspect that Bradley later realized that he wasn't the one in the iconic photo, but he had already gone too far to back out of it later without appearing to have stolen the laurels of another.
